Margaret Lane

To hundreds of children growing up in Andover in the 40’s and 50’s, Margaret Lane was the face of the library for 18 years.  She presided over the children’s room, initiating reading groups for children, and visiting elementary schools where she introduced children to the library and the treasure of books it held for them.

Although we children believed Miss Lane lived in the library, she subsequently taught at a girls’ school in Turkey, served as a Trustee of the Boxford Public Library, and was Director of the Document Center in that town.  She also generously donated parcels of land to the Essex County Greenbelt.  Our Miss Lane was an amazing woman who lived a life of service, her greatest gift to the children of Andover being the love of reading, the gift of a lifetime.
